I obtained my BS in Zoology from North Carolina State University and PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Virginia. I continued to work in biomedical research at the University of Nevada, Reno, and later at Colorado State University. My favorite aspect of research has always been consolidating the data to tell a compelling story. Upon learning about the field of medical writing, I joined a medical communications agency where I received exceptional training in medical writing and communications. Today I am happy to offer freelance medical writing services from my home in Colorado.
A medical writer is a professional who translates medical research data into various documents with specific requirements, including publications, regulatory documents, and other formats as needed. Medical writers are often used by pharmaceutical companies to develop scientific content, freeing up time for research personnel to perform their functions without having to also develop written content. With regard to scientific publications, the medical writer's job is to clearly and effectively communicate data and the perspectives of the authors in a cohesive voice, while also adhering to best publication practices.
I have extensive experience with publications, including scientific manuscripts and congress materials (abstracts, posters, and oral presentations), from both my time as a researcher and as a formal medical communications professional. I also have more than 3 years experience with other types of content, including scientific communication platforms and publication planning processes. See a summary of my experience with various types of content below.
The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) have defined authorship of medical publications based on 4 criteria, as described in the ICMJE recommendations here:
A medical writer may be an author if they meet the above criteria; however, medical writers are typically working under the direction of the authors and are acknowledged for their contributions in the Acknowledgements section of publications. If you hire me to support your projects, I will include this acknowledgement in any publications I help develop and I will not be considered an author unless I meet the above ICMJE criteria.
The Certified Medical Publication Professional™(CMPP™) credential is a voluntary program administered by the International Society for Medical Publication Professionals and certifies that recipients have expertise and proficiency in medical publications and good publication practices. In addition to providing writing support and content development, I am also qualified to advise on ethical standards and best practices to help ensure the integrity of your publications.
Under the direction of the authors, I will develop a scientific narrative that clearly communicates your data and highlights key messages to support your scientific communication strategy. My support will continue from early outlining and target journal selection to final resubmission addressing journal reviewer feedback.
From abstract development and submission to final congress poster copy and/or oral presentation development, I will support your scientific congress needs to ensure key messages are clearly communicated to audiences in attendance.
A scientifically accurate and literature-based scientific communication platform (SCP) for use within your organization provides a comprehensive resource to facilitate internal training and achieve consistent messaging across functions. Working with your internal teams to identify the core gaps and messaging driving your communication strategy, I can develop SCP content spanning from unmet need and disease burden to summary of your asset's mechanism and available data as a resource to promote internal alignment on the scientific narrative for your program.
Based on your development stage, communication needs, and target audiences, I will work with you to map out a publication plan that delivers key messages to specific audiences to ensure your scientific messaging is reaching the stakeholders and patients who will benefit most from your program's success.
In addition to publications and internal support, I will develop content for any other need you may have, including sponsored symposia or medical education resources. If it requires scientifically accurate content, I can support you!
